Reading Assignment (part b)

After reviewing my previous post I decided to hon in on digital literacy with a focus in inquiry. As a classroom teacher I have done research projects and some guided inquiry but I have not felt confident in what I am asking my students to do and using technology can be frustrating with a group of students. These are the resources I found after falling in the search rabbit hole.

Digital literacy

I started off safe in the suggested reading resources for the class. I found on the BC government website there is information on what digital literacies students should be taught in our school system. This document is useful because it has listed broad topics that teachers could implement into their teaching practices. The topics are also tied into the curriculum and the core competencies. It would have been nice to have some specific examples because more of the topic suggest the use a "digital tools" but they don't give any examples on what kind of digital tools. However, on the website there is a Digital Literacies Framework that lists more specific ideas of how digital literacies can be incorporated into classrooms.

Inquiry

The next resource I can upon in my search is more of a text book all about inquiry in the classroom. I was not able to read the whole book but to highlight a few pieces is it talks about different kinds of inquiry and there are examples of how inquiry can look in an elementary school setting. There are even maps of the classroom to show how the physical space can look and be used.

Silvestri, K. N. (2018). The kids inquiry conference: Tensions in literacy activities, practices, and actions across elementary-level spaces for student-driven inquiry (Order No. 10816267). Available from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. (2056874678).

I also was looking for a video to share and I came across this Ted X video that discusses design thinking and how students are leaving higher education without collaboration skills, and creativity to thrive in todays workforce. It is not geared to students at the elementary school level but the ideas Doreen speaks to how we need to think about how our students futures and jobs will be done differently then they are now.

Creative Production

Student agency has been important in my school the last few years. I would like to design a program that will allow students the ability to have students agency when sharing their learning. This final resource is a chapter in a book that shares with readers how digital tools can be a form of creative sharing. The examples in the chapter are of older teenagers using Youtube and Myspace to share things that they are passionate about. If we want students to have a voice we need to teach them all the different avenues on how they can safely share their voice.

  1. You have curated, linked, and annotated a good list of preliminary resources to support your inquiry. You have a strong foundation here for future work. If you intend to continue to investigate this theme for your final project, you may want to start thinking about what kind of digital artifact you could make to share and showcase your learning.
